(February 17, 1919 - July 11, 2010)

Verna L. (Mrs. F. Marvin) Barber, DeWitt, died Sunday afternoon, July 11, 2010 at Community Hospice of Ashland, Kentucky.

Mrs. Barber, the former Verna Lillian Randolph, was born February 17, 1919 at the Randolph family homestead in Scott County, Iowa, to Clarence and Lillian (Litscher) Randolph. She was a 1936 graduate of DeWitt High School and attended Iowa State Teacher's College, now the University of Northern Iowa. Verna married F. Marvin Barber, April 20, 1940 in Cedar Falls. Marvin's career as a professional with the Boy Scouts of America provided opportunities for the couple to live in Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, New Jersey and Kentucky. They also had the adventure of living and working abroad, specifically in Colombia, the Bahamas, Costa Rica, and Jamaica. Marvin retired in 1979, and the couple returned to the McCausland/DeWitt area. Verna later worked as a secretary at the DeWitt Hospital. Her husband, Marvin, preceded her in death October 17, 1987.

She was an active member of the McCausland United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Verna served as president of the United Methodist Women-Muscatine District from 1984-88 and served as president for four years and secretary for four years of the McCausland United Methodist Women. She was a member of Church Women United of Scott County and served as secretary for a time. She was active in the DeWitt garden club and the Lioness club. Verna was a long-time organist of the Low Moor and McCausland United Methodist Churches. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, gardens, and flowers.

Surviving are a son, Raymond Earle Barber,Ph.D., Falls Church, Virginia; daughters, Sue Ellen Barber, Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, and Lillian Lee Dyson, MD and her husband, Stuart, Olive Hill, Kentucky; grandchildren, Steve Dunn, Ruah Dunn, Eric Barber (wife Lainie), Alisa Barber, Brian Dyson (wife Sarah), and Gerald Dyson; great-grandchildren, Terrance, Antonio, Nia, Tiearra, Jack, and Peri; a brother, Kenneth H. Randolph (wife Carmelita).

In addition to her husband, Marvin, Verna was preceded in death by a son in infancy, Marvin Randolph Barber, her parents, a daughter-in-law, Sherry Stephens Barber, and a brother, Alden Randolph.

Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2010. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 17, 2010 in the McCausland United Methodist Church. Pastor Jeffery Bixby will officiate. Burial will follow in the McCausland Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Boy Scouts of America, Illowa Council, 4412 N. Brady St., Davenport, IA 52806.

Pallbearers will be Steve Dunn, Eric Barber, Brian Dyson, Gerald Dyson, Ruah Dunn, and Alisa Barber.
