Charlotte - Joan M. McDonald, 71, of Charlotte died peacefully on Friday, June 11, 2010 at her home surrounded by her loving family following a courageous two year battle with cancer. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, June 14th at Assumption Church in Charlotte. The Rev. David Steinle will officiate. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 7:00 P.M. Sunday at the Pape Funeral Home in Clinton where a rosary will be recited at 7:00 P.M. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery. Casket bearers will be John Streets, Rick Walker, Bob Bowman, Rick Meyer, Lonnie Adrian, Kyle Adrian, Andy Peters, Jr., Ritchie Whitmore, Jimmy Opala and Ryan Hale. Honorary casket bearers will be her grandchildren.

Joan was born in Clinton on March 21, 1939, the daughter of William and Emma Huebbe Whitmore. Joan was united in marriage to William Cleary on May 22, 1954 in Charlotte. William died on October 17, 1968. She later married Carl “Bill” McDonald on September 26, 1969 in Charlotte. Over the years Joan had been employed at various factories and businesses. She retired from Car Freshener, DeWitt. Joan was a staff member and volunteer for the Charlotte Web paper where she was known for “Cooking With Joan”.

Joan was a member of Assumption Catholic Church and was the last surviving member of the Marion Circle at the church. She loved her Iowa Hawkeyes and NASCAR racing, especially #17, Matt Kenseth. She enjoyed bowling where she had won an Iowa State All Events Championship. Joan also enjoyed beating her opponents at bean bags. She was known for her baking and cooking, sewing, quilting, crafts and gardening. She dearly loved spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Joan is survived by her husband, Bill; four children, Teresa (Mike) Ready of Clinton, Kathryn Morgan of Clinton, David (Chris) Cleary of Clinton and Heather (Ron) Lewis of Urbandale; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Troy) Mrstik, William Morgan, Joseph Morgan, Ryan (Amy) Cleary, Koby Cleary, Aspen Lewis and Avery Lewis; a great grand daughter, Ava Waitek; her brothers and sisters, Betty Roster of Canon City, CO, Erma (Dwaine) Bruhn of Miles, Judith (Dennis) Cox of Thomson, IL, Kathryn (Lyle) Adrian of Charlotte, Richard (Sherrill) Whitmore of Thomson, Karen (Stan) Opala of Clinton, Rena (Archie) Archibeque of Forsyth, MO, Denyce (Steve) Wiemers of Gilmore City, IA and Steven Whitmore of Maquoketa; a sister-in-law, Betty Whitmore of Andrew and a brother-in-law, Hugh Bowman of Maquoketa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, a son, William, a daughter, Mary Terese, three brothers, William, Gary and Edward Whitmore, a sister, Mary Bowman, a sister-in-law, Donna Whitmore and a brother-in-law, Jack Roster.
