Darold "George" Dieckmann, 77, of Calamus, Iowa, died Monday, May 31, 2010, at Amber Ridge Assisted Living Facility, DeWitt.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 2, 2010, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Schultz Funeral Home in DeWitt, Iowa. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 3, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church in Calamus with the Rev. Tim Frasher officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Calamus. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to Calamus American Legion or Wesley United Methodist Church.

George was born November 12, 1932, in Calamus, Iowa, to Arthur and Martha (Nelson) Dieckmann. He graduated from Calamus High School in 1952 and joined the Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Shirley Carber on January 11, 1959. Together they raised three wonderful children in Calamus. He worked at Hawkeye Chemical in Clinton, Iowa, retiring after 30 years of service.

George was a a 50 year member of the American Legion, Magnus M. Peterson Post #466. He also was a member of the Davenport Moose Lodge and Wesley United Methodist church, Calamus. He dearly loved talking about his overseas travel, especially his time in Korea. He enjoyed playing cards, boating, fishing, and feeding the birds. He was a huge St. Louis Cardinals and Cleveland Browns fan.

He is survived by his son, Joel and his wife Brenda of DeWitt; his daughter, Julie and her husband Frank Hutchins of Merced, California; a daughter-in-law, Nida Dieckmann of Davenport; six grandchildren Erin (Kevin) Hansen, Kyle, Devon, Drew, Jon Jr. and Joshua Dieckmann; five great-grandchildren, Kaila, Aurelia, Lily, and Shirley Dieckmann and Keaton Hansen; a sister-in-law, Lois Dieckmann, Calamus; two brothers-in-law, Gene Carber, DeWitt, and Robert (Terry) Carber, Des Moines; and many special nieces and nephews.

Preceding George in death were his wife, Shirley, his son, Jon, a brother, William, and a sister, Melba O'Donnell.
