Irene B. Nichols, 88, of Clinton, died Saturday, May 8, 2010 at her home.

Memorial Services will be at 11 AM, Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at the First Congregational Church with Pastor Laura Renault officiating.

The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory is assisting the family.

Irene B. Paisley was born in a farm house on October 3, 1921 near Rickardsville, Iowa, the daughter of John and Agnes (Nelson) Paisley.

Irene was a 1939 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School and a 1941 graduate of the Dubuque Beauty Academy.

She married Gerald D. Nichols on November 20, 1945 at the Immanuel Congregational Church in Dubuque, Iowa.

After 12 years as a cosmetologist she and Gerald purchased Modern Plumbing and Pump Company, which they ran as a team for 25 years, retiring in 1977.

During those years, Irene raised their three children and kept the home running while managing the office for Modern Plumbing.

Irene was a member of Rebekah Lodge # 13 and the First Congregational Church where she was active with the Friendship Circle.

Irene loved gardening, cooking, playing cards, and being with her family.

Irene is survived by her husband: Gerald of Clinton; one daughter: Jane (Craig) Elsasser of Clinton; two sons: James (Cheryl) Nichols of Clinton, and Dale (Christine) Nichols of Clinton; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, and two sisters.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First Congregational Church.
