PRESTON — PRESTON — Dwain C. Morehead, 55, of Preston, Iowa, died Monday, March 8, 2010, at his home.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 11, 2010, at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa. The family will honor his wishes, and cremation will follow visitation. Burial of cremains will be in the Pence Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa, at a later date.

Dwain Clifford Morehead was born October 28, 1954, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Marvin and Virginia (Mohr) Morehead. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Mick Hughes, after the age of six. He attended Maquoketa Public Schools, graduating in 1972 as class valedictorian, and went on to attend Iowa State University.

He worked at John Deere Moline Works in Moline, Illinois, before moving to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1987, where he worked for a pest control business for 17 years, and also a limo service. In June 2008, Dwain was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer and moved back with his parents for his treatments.

He is survived by his parents, Mick and Virginia Hughes of Preston; siblings, Barry Hughes of Shellsburg, Lynn (Julie) Hughes of Cedar Rapids, Lori (Ritch) Skrivseth and Jay (Sherri) Hughes of Preston and Christopher (Tracey) Hughes of Davenport; and nieces and nephews, Nicole (Corey) Rushford, Jaymie, Ashlee and Samantha Hughes, John (Abby), Cody (Kelly) and Casey Skrivseth and Kyle, Jacob and Austin Hughes. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and his second family at Gallager’s in Phoenix, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, “Bub” and Mary Mohr, paternal grandparents, Clifford and Evelyn Morehead and Leo and Mary Hughes; a nephew, Cale Hughes; and his biological father, Marvin Morehead.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the family for a future scholarship fund.
