LONG GROVE — LaVerne J. Stevens, 75, Long Grove, died Monday morning, June 15, 2009, at Pathway Hospice at Terrace Park, Bettendorf. He was born June 29, 1933, in Long Grove, to Julian Francis and Sarah Maude (McCabe) Stevens. He served in the Army during the Korean War era. LaVerne worked for John Deere Harvester for 30 years until retirement. LaVerne was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt. He was one of the last surviving members of the Wapsi Tigers. LaVerne always had a good story to tell. Surviving are his children, Joseph Stevens and his wife, Theresa, Bolingbrook, Illinois, Dawn Zybarth, Long Grove, Heidi Jones and her husband, Troy, Savanna, Illinois; stepsons, Robin, Tim, Jim, Danny and Wes; grandchildren, Terra (Jason) Smith, Nicholas and Nate Zybarth and Steven and Adrian Barragan; a stepgrandson, Jeffrey White and a great-grandson, Nico. Further surviving are sisters, Martha Smith, DeWitt, and Gloria (Art) Granheim, St. James, Minnesota; and his fiancée, Carol Stevens. Preceding LaVerne in death were his parents, a grandson, Joseph, brothers, Tom, John and Francis and sisters, Ella Mae McGlaughlin and Margaret Paustian. Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2009. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009, in the funeral home chapel. Burial and military rites by Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238 of DeWitt will be at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Pallbearers will be Jeffrey White, Nick and Nate Zybarth, Steven and Adrian Barragan and Adam Schnoor. Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Grandinetti, Bino Garrity, Bob Burmeister and Kenneth Schnoor.
