CLINTON — Ruth Grumstrup, 92, of Clinton, died, Sunday, May 17, 2009, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory with the Rev. Bobb Barrick officiating. There will be an Eastern Star Service in conjunction with the funeral service. Burial will be in the Springdale Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Bob Gentz, Paul Behrens, David Jenkins, Mark Truninger, Craig Jenkins and Larry Markley. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Ruth Fassett was born on September 7, 1916, in Prophetstown, Illinois, the daughter of Earl and Ella (Echelbarger) Fassett. She married Frederick D. Grumstrup on June 10, 1942, in Prophetstown; he later died May 20, 1990. Ruth attended Prophetstown grade and high schools graduating in 1934 from high school. She attended Northern Illinois State Teachers College in DeKalb, Illinois, graduating in 1936. She taught school for 6 years in Whiteside County and substituted in the Clinton Community Schools for 25 years. Ruth was a Sunday school teacher at the First United Methodist Church, assistant Den Mother in Cub Scouts, first PTA president at Henry Sabin Elementary School, former president of the Clinton County PTA, volunteered many years with the Agatha Auxiliary at Jane Lamb Hospital, past matron of Clinton Chapter O.E.S 65. She loved to travel and spend her summers in the Northwoods of Minnesota, and also designed the flower beds and helped plant the flowers in the Clinton Parks when her husband was the superintendent of the park board for 40 years. Ruth is survived by her son, Bruce Grumstrup and his wife, Beth, of Marshalltown, Iowa; and one daughter, Bonnie Jenkins and her husband, Les, of Iowa City, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris) Hubbs, Heidi (Marc) Oostenink and Eric Grumstrup; and three great-grandchildren, Casey and Caden Hubbs and Mason Oostenink. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Helen and Marian. The family requests that memorials be made to Iowa City Hospice.
