CLINTON — Hazel I. Nixon, age 83, of Clinton died Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 9 at Prince of Peace Parish, Sacred Heart Church in Clinton. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Pape Funeral Home. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Marty Powell, David Varner, Don Buckman, Bill Mort, Ed Green and Robert Gaarde. Honorary casket bearers will be Gary Nixon, Mike Nixon, Wayne Nixon and Matt Rimmer. Hazel was born in Hagerstown, MD on January 11, 1926, the daughter of Clyde and Ruth Wulf Powell. Hazel attended Clinton Schools. She married Robert V. Nixon on October 21, 1944 in Clinton. Robert died on July 4, 2001. Hazel had worked aboard the "Idler" boat in Clinton. She had also been employed with Clinton Corn Processing Company, Collis Company and International Paper from which she retired. Hazel was a member of Prince of Peace Parish. She was a family first lady who enjoyed baking and cooking. Hazel is survived by three children; Patrick (Cheryl) Nixon of Fayetteville, NC, Bobbie Jo (Dale) Dalton of Clinton and Julie (Terry) Strike of Prophetstown, IL; 21 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three sisters; Anna Loots, Becky Niles and Carole Jacobsen all of Clinton. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Joseph, a grandson, Patrick Proud, three brothers and a sister. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Patrick Proud Music Scholarship at Clinton High School. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com. Death date: May 5, 2009
