The Clinton Herald Thursday February 28, 1924 p. 8 Alice Lampe, nine year old daughter of Henry Lampe, residing on the Main street road two miles west of Lyons, was drowned in Mill Creek about 6 o'clock Wednesday evening. The body was recovered this morning at 7:30 o'clock near the scene of the accident. The story of the unfortunated accident as told from the family home this morning was that Alice with her brother Raymond, age seven years, left home shortly before six o'clock to bring the cows from the pasture, which is about forty rods south of the Mill Creek bridge. The cattle had crossed to the other side of the creek. Alice was determined to cross also, and although her little brother pleaded with her not to attempt it, she started across the ice and water alone. It is thought she slipped and fell beneath the ice. Her brother who witnessed the accident hurried home and en route met his father who was on his way to assist the children. Neighbors were immediately notified and efforts made to recover the body, however they were not rewarded until this morning when the child's body was found ledged beneath a ledge of ice. It was necessary to saw away the ice to remove the little body from the water. Cornoner Kellogg was notified and decided that an inquest would not be necessary. Alice Lampe was born June 3, 1915 at the rural home west of Lyons. She attended the Dierks school, was a lovable child and a favorite with all who knew her. Her mother passed away January 12, 1923. She is survived by her father, three brothers, Raymond, Elmer and Norman and three sisters, Leona, Florence and Henrietta. Funeral arrangement were not completed today.
