DEWITT — Alice Adrain Peters, 83, DeWitt, formerly of Calamus, died Thursday evening, April 16, 2009 at Westwing Place, DeWitt. She was born February 13, 1926 on the family farm south of Calamus, to Julius and Elodie (Dummon) Ballekins. She attended Calamus School. On May 20, 1944, Alice was united in marriage to Lester V. Peters in Clinton. She was employed at Mississippi Engineering and also worked at Johnson's Grocery Store in Calamus, prior to her employment at the Cal-Wheat School. She was a cook there for 26 years. She retired in May of 1999. Lester preceded Alice in death on January 31, 1986. Alice was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus. She loved to bake and was known for her homemade buns and rosettes. Surviving are daughters, Judy (Mrs. Jerry) Weiss, DeWitt, Jo (Mrs. Kent) Petersen, Delmar; sons, Lester V. Peters, Jr., Calamus, Kevin Peters, Davenport, and Scott Peters, Eldridge; eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Preceding Alice in death in addition to her husband were her parents, a grandson and a sister, Madeline Dunn. The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009 in Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus. The Rev. Sarah Kretzmann will preside with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery, Calamus.
