Sister Mercita Deacon, OSF 02/13/2001 CLINTON, Iowa -- Services for Sister Mercita Deacon, OSF, of the Alverno Health Care Facility, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at The Canticle Chapel, Clinton. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery, Clinton. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at The Canticle, 3rd Floor, with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Sister Mercita died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at the Alverno. She was a junior and senior high school mathematics and science teacher for 60 years, most recently in Chino, Calif. She served there for 18 years as teacher and director of St. Margaret Learning Center. Before that, she taught 21 years in Iowa schools, including in Clinton (1948-1949), Petersville, Vail and Victor, and was principal 15 years in Fonda. She was born June 19, 1911, in Varina. She joined the Sisters of St. Francis in 1934 and professed her final vows in 1940. Survivors include sisters, Mathilda Sylvester, Tigard, Ore., Josephine Fox, Westminster, Calif., and Kathleen Wilson, Santa Rosa, Calif.; and a brother, John Deacon, Yankton, S.D.
