DEWITT — Ernest J. “Bart” Bartholomew, 83, DeWitt, died Saturday morning, December 13, 2008, at the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown. Ernest Jesse “Bart” Bartholomew was born May 14, 1925, in Conrad, Iowa, to Floyd and Lois (Starr) Bartholomew. Bart served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. On December 26, 1946, he was united in marriage to Shirley Rhodes in Marshalltown, Iowa. After serving 20 years with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, Bart was self employed as a drainage tile contractor. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238, DeWitt, and was a former longtime member of the Izaak Walton League. Bart loved to read and write and penned a weekly column in the DeWitt Observer under the heading of The Disturbed Philosopher. He also enjoyed the outdoors, horses and traveling. He admired Fredrick Remington paintings and was an avid gun collector. Surviving are his wife, Shirley; sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Elizabeth Bartholomew, Cedar Falls, and Redge and Ellen Bartholomew, Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Lee and Jesse Bartholomew and Emily and Reid Bartholomew; sisters and a brother-in-law, Mavis Nelson, Gladbrook, and Eleanor and Gene Robb, Marshalltown. Preceding Bart in death were his parents. The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2008. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 18, 2008, in the United Methodist Church, DeWitt. The Rev. Chuck Kelsey will officiate. Interment will be at the Conrad Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the DeWitt American Legion. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Iowa Veterans Home.Honorary pallbearers will be Lee, Jesse and Reid Bartholomew, Jack Holst and Bill Homrighausen.Condolences may be expressed and a photo tribute viewed at www.schultzfuneralhomes.com.Death date: Dec. 13, 2008
