KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Steven L. Merchant, 55, of Kalamazoo, MI, passed away Thursday afternoon, November 20, 2008. Steve was born February 7, 1953, the son of Ervin and Margaret (Tozer) Merchant and had lived in the Kalamazoo and Portage area all his life. He graduated from Portage Central High School in 1972 and attended KVCC. Steve recently retired from Bronson Methodist Hospital where he had been employed for 30 years. He was an avid Detroit Tigers fan and attended as many games as possible. He was a member of Fourth Reformed Church. Steve was preceded in death by his father, Ervin; his sister, Carol Schafer; and his stepfather, Milo Weiss. He is survived by his mother, Margaret Weiss; brothers, Thomas (Terry) Merchant, Bruce (Karen) Merchant; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.A service to celebrate Steve’s life will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Fourth Reformed Church, 6339 Atlantic, with Pastor Thomas Merchant officiating. Private interment will be at a later date in South Portage Cemetery. Friends may meet the family Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick.
