Civil War Record and has Played Prominent Part in Affairs

Maquoketa, Oct. 4--It was with a feeling of deep regret that the people learned of the death Thursday evening of S.M. Gibson at Andrew after an illiness of but a few hours.

A REAL PIONEER
He was born in Butler County, Penn., in 1840. His parents, William R. and Martha Gibson moved to this county in 1852 when the deceased was a lad of tweleve years, they settled in Perry twonship, where the deceased grew to manhood and has since resided. During the conflict between the north and south he responded to his country's call and in 1862 enlisted in Company M, 2nd L.V.C. being mustered into service with his regiment at Davenport and took active part in every engagement the regiment was in.; The siege of Corinth, battles of Farmington, Booneville, Rienzi, Luck, Corinth, Coffeeville, Palto, Birmingham, Jackson, Grenada, Colliersville, Moscow, Pontotoc, Tupelo, Old Town, Oxford and engagements against Hood's march on Nashville, battle of Nashville, etc. He was mustered out with the regiment at Selma, Ala., Sept. 19, 1865.
In Lawrence County, Penn., in 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha McChesney who is left to mourn his death with a daughter and three sons, namely; Mrs. Henry Strain, wife of the deputy auditor of this county. Frank W. our genial deputy postmaster and Ross C. pastor the the United Presbyterian church of San Jose, Cal., and William, who conducts afruit farm near Fowler, Cal., and who will be the only one absent from the funeral services which will be held at the home Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by Rev. J.A. Schrader, pastor of the United Presbyterian church which the deceased has been a life long member. Burial will be made in the cemetery there. The breaved have the sympathy of all.
