TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Marjorie Graybill Herkelmann died on October 7, 2008, at the Bay Ridge Living Center in Traverse City, Michigan. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2008, at 3 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City. Marjorie was born on October 23,1917, in David City, Nebraska, to Lottie and Arthur Graybill. She graduated from David City High School in 1935, valedictorian of her class. In 1939 she received a BFA in Music Education from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln Nebraska where she was president of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, member of the honor society for senior women and was chosen the Ideal Plainswoman during her senior year. Marjorie sang the leading roles in Wesleyan’s operas, Smetana’s “Bartered Bride” and Romberg’s “Student Prince.” During the early 40’s she did graduate work at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. For ten years she taught high school vocal music in O’Niell, Nebraska, Manning, Iowa and Clinton, Iowa. Marjorie was Director of Music for 25 years at First United Methodist Church, Clinton, Iowa, where she was a member for more than 50 years.She met her husband Leo, while teaching at Clinton High School. They were married on June 23, 1949, at St. Luke’s Methodist Church in David City, Nebraska. They have two daughters, Ann and Kathie. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Traverse City, Michigan, Chapter EH, P.E.O. Sisterhood, past president of the Agatha Auxiliary at Jane Lamb Hospital, Clinton, Iowa, and past member of the Board of Trustees, Jane Lamb Hospital, Clinton, Iowa.She is survived by her daughters, Ann Hanson (Byron) of Traverse City, Michigan, and Kathie Herkelmann of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and her granddaughters, Meredith and Lindsay Hanson. Her husband, Leo and her parents preceded her in death.In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Interlochen Center for the Arts, P.O.
