SAVANNA, Ill. — Virginia Ruth Croghan, age 94, of Savanna, Illinois, died on September 24, 2008, at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 11, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Michael Wey officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial fund has been established in Virginia’s name to Cambell Center for Historic Preservation Studies, 203 East Seminary, Mt. Carroll, Illinois 61053. Online condolences and memorial tributes may be given to the family at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com.Virginia was born on October 30, 1913, in Dundee, Illinois, the daughter of Otis A. and Mary L. (Hench) Croghan. She was raised in Savanna Illinois, graduating from the Savanna High School in 1932. She was a 1936 graduate of Frances Shimer Junior College, where she was noted for her basketball prowess. She then taught at several country schools in Illinois before joining the Navy on August 15, 1944. After serving as a recruit trainer in New York City, she was discharged on January 1, 1946. Virginia received a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Northern Illinois in 1947 and a Master’s degree from the University of Chicago in 1951. She taught Junior High English in Crystal Lake, Illinois, for twenty five years, and being honored by the naming of the Junior High School Library for her. Virginia was active in the Savanna Community, serving on the Library Board, and participating in the Savanna Women’s Club, Order of the Eastern Star and the First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Virginia was an ardent advocate of wildlife conservation and historic preservation. Virginia is survived by a nephew, William (Christine) Croghan of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; a niece, Laura Calderwood of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a great-niece, Anna Croghan; and a great-nephew, Connett Croghan. Virginia is preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Robert Croghan; one sister Dorothy Croghan.Death date: Sept. 24, 2008
