GOOSE LAKE — Leroy J. “Butch” Burken, age 73, of Goose Lake, IA, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at Mercy Living Center South Campus in Clinton. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Sunday 11:30 a.m., at Assumption St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Charlotte. Visitation will be held Saturday 4 to 8 p.m. at the Pape Funeral Home in Clinton, where a 7:30 pm vigil service will be conducted, and Sunday 10:30 a.m. until the service hour at the church in Charlotte. Burial will be held at Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Charlotte. Casket bearers will be his grandchildren, Matt, Jeremy, Andy, Marcus, T.J. Burken, Brent Munck, and Matt Bowman. Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters. Leroy was born on Dec. 2, 1934, in Clinton, IA, the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Wagemester) Burken. He graduated from Goose Lake High School in 1952. Leroy was a member of the U.S. National Guard in Clinton for six years. He married Darla Kieffer on Oct. 15, 1955 in Preston, IA. Leroy was a farmer for over 23 years, owned and operated his own corn sheller business for many years, and was a feed and seed salesman for Bullock’s in Maquoketa, where he retired in 2005. He was a member of Assumption St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He was a former fire chief in Goose Lake and member of Goose Lake Lions Club. He was an avid Hawkeye and Cubs fan, a bird enthusiast, and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Leroy is survived by his wife, Darla of Goose Lake; three sons, Brad (Anna) Burken of Charlotte, Tim (Barb) Burken of Charlotte, and Joel (Hope) Burken of Rolla, MO; his daughter, Annette (Todd) Munck of Fulton, IL; 17 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; two brothers, Jim (Mary) Burken of Preston and Tom Burken of Broken Arrow, OK; and a sister, Connie (Roger) Gerber of Preston. He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Paul in 2004, a brother, and a sister. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.Death date: September 25, 2008#
