DEWITT — Gene McManus, 85, DeWitt, Iowa, died Saturday afternoon, August 9, 2008, at Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport, Iowa. Edward Eugene McManus was born June 16, 1923, in rural Clinton County, Iowa, near DeWitt, to Edward James and Hazel Mae (Butterfield) McManus. Gene was a 1941 graduate of St. Joseph High School DeWitt. On November 16, 1942, he was united in marriage to the former Edna Mae Cooper at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. The couple had over 65 happy years of marriage together. He was a very good businessman, owning and operating McManus Produce with his father until retirement. Gene worked for JI Case, IOCO and Tara Takeout for a short time. He was the manager of Senior Heights in DeWitt, and Church View Apartments in Grand Mound, for 20 years.Gene was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, and the Knights of Columbus. He loved to play cards and enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles and daily coffee with friends. Surviving are his loving wife, Edna; six children, Vicky (Duane) Poell, DeWitt, Judy (David) Sackett, Missouri, Mike (Mary Kay) McManus, DeWitt, Janet Campbell, DeWitt, Richard (Barbara) McManus, Florida, and Roberta (H.C.) Peters, Cedar Rapids; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.Preceding Gene in death were his parents, three brothers, Arthur, Robert and Paul; three sisters, Sister Margaret Ann McManus, RSM, Marcella Wagner and Esther Hovey; and a grandson, Gabe McManus. The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2008, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. A memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2008, in the church with the Rev. Fr. H. Robert Harness presiding. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Grand Mound. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund has been established.
