SABULA — Vincent Charles DeMeulenaere, 87, of Sabula, died August 8, 2008, at Mercy Care North in Clinton. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor, with the Rev. Brian Shepley officiating. Organist will be Vera Beth Bricker. Pallbearers will be Gary DeMeulenaere, Dan DeMeulenaere, Steve DeMeulenaere, Joseph Edelen, Eugene Edelen, Don Edelen, Neill Dunlap, Tom Kurovski and Pat Sulluivan. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by the Victor American Legion. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 Monday, August 11, at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor and where the family will be present from 4:00 until 8:00 Monday evening. A vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The son of August and Katherine Michalek DeMeulenaere, he was born at Carnforth, Iowa, on February 28, 1921. He was raised in the Carnforth area and attended Warren 5 Grade School and graduated from St. John’s High School in Victor. During World War II, he served with the amphibious forces of the United States Navy in the European Theatre. On September 13, 1952, he was married to Kathryn Christine Low at All Saints Church in Cedar Rapids. The couple made their home in Cedar Rapids until her death on June 7, 1982. They were the parents of two children, Karen and Richard. Vincent was employed with Iowa Lumber Dealers, Inc. for 15 years and then began in 1973 working for Quaker Oats Company in Cedar Rapids, retiring in 1983. He was a member of St. Peter’s Church in Sabula, Sabula Veteran of Foreign Wars, the Victor American Legion, and the Sabula Izaak Walton League. Vincent was an avid Cubs fan and loved to spend time with his family and friends. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, bird-watching, and traveling. He held a passion for documenting his family history. Survivors include his son, Richard James DeMeulenaere and his wife, Peggy, of Cedar Rapids; his daughter, Karen Ann Dunlap and her husband, Craig Dunlap, of Central City; four grandchildren, Melinda Billock and her husband, Matt, of Mundelein, Illinois, Kathryn Mary (Dunlap) Walsh and her husband, Shawn, of Cedar Rapids, Nancy Jean Dunlap and Neill Dunlap of Central City; one great-grandson, Brady Quinn Walsh; two sisters, Sister Irene DeMeulenaere of Huntington, Indiana, and Ruth DeMeulenaere of Victor; and his lifetime friend, Betty (Swatosh) Marsh of Sabula with whom he had made his home during his retirement years. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers, Francis and Bernard; and two sisters, Evelyn Ann Edelen and Sister Therese DeMeulenaere. Death date: Aug. 8, 2008
