SABULA — Joan W. Thompson, age 82, of Sabula, Iowa, died Monday, July 14, 2008, at home lovingly surrounded by her family. A memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008, at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church, Sabula. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospice. Online condolences may be given to the family at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com.Joan was born July 31, 1925, in Iowa Twp, near Miles, Iowa, the daughter of Edwin K. and Grace (Wall) Walker. She attended Walker School and graduated from Miles High School. She went on to attend college and became a registered nurse. Joan married James M. Thompson on September 20, 1957, in Balboa, Canal Zone, in the Republic of Panama. He preceded her in death in 2000. Joan worked as a psychiatric RN at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa, St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, and for most of her career at Gorgas Hospital in Panama. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the U.S. Civil Service Commission, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Eastern Iowa Tourism Association, the Iowa Bed and Breakfast Guild, and the National Rifle Association, she was a gun toting granny. After she retired, Joan ran the Castle Bed and Breakfast in Sabula, where she enjoyed meeting new people. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and traveling as much as possible. Joan was very much a philanthropist to her entire family, helping anyway she could, not only financially, but investing the time and love of a caring mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Joan will be dearly missed by her two sons, Michael J. Thompson of Medellin, Colombia, and James G. (Rachel) Thompson of Girdwood, Alaska; three daughters, Patricia K. (Tim) Plucker of Michigan, Sharon A. (John) Mangler of Sabula, and Mary T. (John) Snavely of Panama; eleven grandchildren, Cindy (Curt Dyson) Mangler, Keisha (Dave) Miller, Alexis Mangler, Lisa (Vinnie) Polizzi, Jennifer (Joe) Orfe, Christina (Ryan) Farrier, Joseph Plucker, Colin Thompson, Morgan Thompson, Darien (Getsy) Snavely, and Sheldon Snavely; eleven great-grandchildren, Nakita, Dakota, Dylon, Noah, Alex, Ethan, Braden, Sabrian, Anthony, Abby, and Joe; one brother, Wayne (Jean) Walker of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters, Margaret Sell of Phoenix, and Joyce (Rick) Dickinson of Sabula; as well as many nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Myron Sell. Death date: July 14, 2008
