The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Luthern Church for Walter S. MASSEY, 84, of 122 Fayette St.
He died Monday in his home.
The rev. Brian “Pete” HAGGLUND will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Pape Funeral Home, and from 10 a.m. until the service time Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery
Pallbearers will be Richard GLAZIER, Jason and John BARTEN and Bryan and Mark WILSON. Honorary pallbearers will be Lester GLAZIER, Gary DUNCAN, Gary MASSEY, Jake BARTEN and Douglas JENSEN.
He was born Sept 21, 1913, in Whiteside County, Ill., to John and Mary HALL MASSEY Sr. He married Bessie BENNET in 1936 in Cedar Rapids. She died in 1968. He later married Alma BENDIXEN, Nov 28, 1969, in Clinton.
He was educated in the Whiteside school system.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army in the European Theatre. He was wounded in Italy and received the purple heart.
He was employed as a foreman with Burlington Northern Railroad for 39 years, retiring in 1975.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 190, the Disabled American
Veterans and Zion Lutheran Church. He was a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert D. MASSEY of Cary, Ill.; a grandson; a step-grandson; a brother, John MASSEY Jr. of Morrison, Ill.; and two sisters, Loretta WILSON of Prophetstown, ill., and Mrs. Mary (Eugene) WILSON of Rock Falls, Ill.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
