CLINTON — Michael G. “Mike” Johnson, age 52, of Clinton died Friday, May 23, 2008, at his home. Michael was born in Waukegan, IL, on June 21, 1956, to Eugene and Norma Turner Johnson. Mike played varsity football and was a varsity wrestler at Marengo High School. He graduated from there in 1974. Because he had once been homeless, Mike had great compassion for their plight. His motto was “Give a hand up not a hand out.” He spent many hours volunteering for the Open Door Mission. Many times, he opened his home to those in need. Mike also found great joy in volunteering for The Arc.For more than 20 years, Michael worked for the city of Clinton in different departments. He was also a member of Local 8818. Often, he would rescue animals from the Water Treatment plant where he last worked. This was another example of how he lived his motto.Michael had many interests and hobbies that he loved to share with others. He was active member in several local and online chess clubs. One interest that was dear to him was the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). He was the founder and sensechal of the local shire of Aeries‚ Keep. Within the society. Mike was known as Egron. Mike is survived by two sons, Adam C. Johnson, 3rd Class Petty Officer, stationed in Middlecreek, VA, and Ryan M. Johnson of St. Charles, MO; two brothers, Robert Rider of Apache Junction, AZ, and Roy M. (Brenda) Johnson; two sisters, Patrice Powell of Washington, IL, and Dana (Jonathan) Jaeger of Leslie, AR; and a number of beloved nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Ray Johnson; paternal and maternal grandparents; his parents; and a sister, Alice Johnson.Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, May 31st, with a memory sharing service following from 3-5. It will be held at Pape Funeral Home in Clinton, IAWe will be remembering our times with Mike during the service. Everyone is welcome to come and share their memories of him. Any SCA members who would like to come in full dress are welcome. The family would love to know the Mike you knew.
