ANDOVER — Verana J. Johnson, age 74, of Andover, Iowa, died Friday, May 30, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3rd, at Faith Lutheran Church in Andover. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the church and from 9:00 am. until the service time Tuesday also at the church. Burial will be in Andover Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Jason Johnson, Jeffrey “Jeffy” Reams, Dustin Johnson, Nathan Johnson, Alex Johnson, Adam “Butter” Stevens, Tyler Carroll, David Warder, Drew Miller and Rimvydas “Rim” Baltaduoni. The Pape Funeral Home, Clinton, is assisting the family. Verana was born in Bellevue, Iowa, on July 28, 1933, the daughter of J. Clifford and Mavis Reed Grant. She graduated from Preston High School in 1950. Verana married Robert L. Johnson on March 25, 1951, in Bellevue. Verana had worked at the Mercy Hospital Snack Bar from 1979 to 1985 and at Sweetheart Bakery from 1985 to 1990. She and her husband operated Johnson Valley Beef where she was involved with all facets of the family farming operation. Verana also served as clerk for her husband when he represented the 38th District from 1990-1991 and loved helping at Memory Bound Store with her daughters in Ankeny. Verana was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Andover where she served as Sunday school superintendent and teacher. She was a member of the Altar Guild, served as president of the church council, was on the evangelism committee, was banner chairman and the junior choir director. She served with the Cowbelles (Cattlemen’s Auxiliary) where she served as state committee chairperson and state director, local level president, vice president, secretary and treasurer, state president elect in 1993-1994 and state president 1995-1996. She was awarded the State Cow Gal in 1998. Verana was a member of the Miles Literary Club where she served as president and secretary and treasurer. She served the Miles School District as Music Boosters and Athletic Boosters Club president. She was a past member of the Community Care Board and had been very active with the Farm Bureau Women’s group. Verana enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, watching the sunrise, dancing, bowling and playing cards, especially bridge and 500. Verana is survived by her husband, Robert; their children, Doug (his wife, Janet) Johnson of Beloit, KS, Diane (her husband, Richard) Reams of Ankeny, IA, Darwin (his friend, Michelle) of Andover and Dawn (her husband, Dennis) Johnson of Ankeny. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Geraldine (her husband, Loren) Nolting and a brother, Gerald (his wife, Marvel) Grant, both of Preston. Verana was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Dwight, a granddaughter, Jenilee and an infant brother. Death date: May 30, 2008
