Dr. Virginia M. MCANDREWS CLARK, 71, of 402 6th Ave. South, a lifetime resident of Clinton, succumbed to an extended illness at Samaritan Health System, North Campus, on Monday, April 20, 1998. A Mass of Resurrection and Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 1998 at the Canticle Chapel, Clinton, the new home of Sisters of St. Francis. Arrangements are with Schmitz Funeral Home in Clinton.
She was born the daughter of Dr. Patrick and Ruth PELLEGRIN McANDREWS on December 22, 1926, in Charlotte, North Carolina. She married John B. CLARK on June 4, 1949, in Cordova, Illinois.
An accomplished equestrian, Dr. CLARK was a cultural and civic contributor to the community up until the time of her illness. She was a graduate of St Mary’s Grammar and High School in Clinton, and attended Clark College in Dubuque. She also attended the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, and received her bachelor of science degree from Florida Atlantic University in Roca Raton. In 1948, she graduated from the Palmer School or Chiropractic in Davenport.
She also studied at Rosemont College in Rosemont, Pennsylvania, Western Illinois University in Macomb, Bridgeport University in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and Presley Graduate College in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr. CLARK was engaged in private chiropractic practice in Clinton for many years. After serving as a volunteer with New Directions in Clinton, she became a trainer in charge of therapy and was responsible for state licensing of the program. Dr. CLARK was an assistant manager of a 22-bed facility for chemically dependent women in Delray Beach, Illinois. Since 1957, she has owned income property in Clinton.
For the past 42 years, Dr. CLARK had been a member of the International Chiropractic Association. She was a member of the American Association of the University Women, a member of Jesus Christ, Prince of Peach Parish in Clinton and was also a member of the Clinton Franciscan Association.
Her survivors include one sister, Monica LAHEY of Greenwich, Connecticut; five brothers, John P. “Jack” McANDREWS of Pebble Beach, California, Dr. Jerome F. “Jerry” McANDREWS of Tulsa, Oklahoma, George P. McANDREWS of Barrington, Illinois, Thomas P. McANDREWS of Kiawah Island, South Carolina, and David M. McANDREWS of Wilmington, Delaware; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and infant twin siblings, Jane and James.
At Dr. CLARK’s request, her remains have been donated to the University of Iowa Medical School for the purposes of research. Her family requests that any expression of sympathy be made by way of donations to the Prince of Peace School Foundation. 505 9th Avenue South, Clinton, Iowa 52732.
