DEWITT — Arthur H. Jessen, 86, DeWitt, Iowa, died peacefully, Thursday morning, May 1, 2008 in his home with his family at his side. Mr. Jessen was born October 13, 1921 on the family farm at rural DeWitt, Iowa. Art was one of three children born to Ernest Frank and Minnie Blanche (Freeman) Jessen. He graduated from DeWitt High School where he was a decorated wrestler. Art served in the United States Merchant Marine during World War II in the South Pacific. He married Gladys Garrick, June 25, 1943 at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. Art worked as a stonemason for many years. He then worked for Iowa Mutual Insurance, DeWitt, until retirement in 1983. An active member of DeWitt Lutheran Fellowship, he enjoyed hunting and woodworking. He was a charter member of the Teal Club and enjoyed the outdoors. Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Gladys; a son, Tony Jessen and his wife, Carla, DeWitt; a grandson, Garrick Jessen and his wife, Cindy, DeWitt; a granddaughter, Tarah Jessen and fiancée, Kevin Lee, Eldridge; a great-grandson, Andy and a great-granddaughter, Samantha. Preceding Art in death were his parents, a brother, Robert Jessen and a sister, Mildred Hudson. Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., Friday, May 2, 2008. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2008 at DeWitt Lutheran Fellowship, with Pastor Paul J. Lang officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Pallbearers will be Tony Jessen, Garrick Jessen, Andy Jessen, Dennis Bauer, Kevin Lee and Don Hesse. Honorary pallbearers will be Rex Peters, Bud Wieck, Richard Walker, Merlyn “Buck” Schau and Art Barber. Condolences may be expressed at www.schultzfuneralhomes.com. Death date: May 1, 2008
