Richard N. Howes 1893 - 1940

The Clinton Herald Monday March 18, 1940 p. 5 Dr. Richard N. Howes, Jr., 46, 315 First avenue, son of Mayor R.N. howes, died at 3:15 a.m. today in a United States veterans hospital in Los Angeles, Calif., where he had been receiving treatment. Dr. Howes had been in failing health since last April. The body will arrive here Wednesday and will be taken to the Bragonier chapel. Funeral services probably will be held Thursday. Dr. Howes was born Dec. 27, 1893, son of Richard N. and Mary Springer Howes. He attended the local schools and was graduated from Clinton High school, later attending the University of Iowa where he studied dentistry. He served in the World war, after which he practiced dentistry here until his health forced him to give up his work. Dr. Howes is survived by his wife, the former Miss Mamie Petersen, who was at his bedside when he died, a daughter, Miss Alice Howes, a student at Cornell college, Mt. Vernon; his father, Mayor Richard N. Howes, Sr., two brothers, Edward Howes, Los Angeles, Calif., and Frank B. Howes, Davenport, and a sister, Miss Harriett Howes, Chicago. His mother died in 1919. Dr. Howes was a member of June Van Meter post, 190, American Legion, and De Molay consistory, A.A.S.R. Masons, and Emulation lodge, 255, A.F. & A.M.
