The Clinton Herald Tuesday July 1, 1969 p. 10 Laurence M. Howes, 72, 319 4th Ave. S., retired real estate broker and insurance agent, died at 10:25 p.m. Monday in Jane Lamb hospital. Funeral services will be held in the First Presbyterian church Thursday at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Richard A. Dempsey officiating. Burial will be in Springdale cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the Board of Realtors: Lee Bossen, O.W. Barnes, Robert Rutenbeck, Franklin Ebensberger, Dwaine Van Buer and Robert Gibson. Friends may call at the Snell-Smith funeral home beginning Wednesday at 4 p.m. The body will be taken to the church at noon Thursday. Laurence Howes was born April 12, 1897, in Clinton to Edward M. and Anna Bedford Howes. He attended Clinton high school and Stanford University and graduated from the University of Iowa. He served in the Navy during World War I. He married Orpha Atwood, July 7, 1927, in Armstrong, Iowa. Mr. Howes was a member of the First Presbyterian church and served as an elder and trustee, Emulation Masonic Lodge 255, AF and AM, and the Clinton Consistory. He was a 50 year member of June Van Meter post, American Legion; also a member of Clinton Kiwanis club, the Clinton Association of Independent Insurance Agents, Clinton Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Clinton Board of Realtors, and active in the YMCA. He owned and operated the Howes Building and was president of the E.M. Howes Corp. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Edward A. of Clinton and Devid B. of Houston, Texas; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a stepsister.
