Orpha Atwood Howes 1903 - 1981

The Clinton Herald Decemberr 14, 1981 p. 13 Mrs. Orpha Atwood Howes, 77, of 319 4th Ave. S., died Sunday in The Alverno. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Leslie Pritchard officiating. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Snell-Zornig Funeral Home, Clinton. Pallbearers will be Chris Roberts, Jonathan and Dan Shaff, and Jerry and Patten Atwood. Mrs. Howes was born Dec. 29, 1903, in Armstrong, Iowa, to Patten and Sophronia Northam Atwood. She married Laurence M. Howes July 7, 1927, in Armstrong. He died in June 1969. She was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, and taught elementary school in DeWitt for two years. She came to Clinton in 1927. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she was a former deaconess, a member of Miriam Rebecca Circle, Sunoida Club and FI Chapter of PEO. Survivors include two sons, Edward A. Howes of Clinton, and David B. Howes of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren; and two brothers, Harold Atwood of Sun City Ariz., and Lester Atwood of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother and a sister.
