Charles Whitney 1894 - 1918

The Clinton Herald April 6, 1918 Mr. and Mrs. Charles Whitney received a telegram this morning telling of the critical illness of their son William, who is in a New York hospital. The lad enlisted in the aviation section last fall. Mrs. Whitney accompanied by her son-in-law, Harold Guernsey, left this morning for New York.

The Clinton Herald April 9, 1918 p. 6 William Whitney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Whitney, 824 Third avenue, died of pneumonia last evening at 7 o'clock at the military hospital, Garden City, N.Y. His mother and brother-in-law, Harold C. Guernsey, have started home and will arrive in Clinton tomorrow afternoon. The body will come on a later train. The young man, who would have been 24 years of age next July -- enlisted last fall in the aviation section of the U.S. army. He leaves to mourn his death, his parents, his sister Leila, Mrs. Guernsey and brother Henry C. Whitney. No funeral arrangements will be made until after the arrival of his mother, Mrs. Whitney and Mr. Guernsey arrived in New York Sunday morning and found the boy critically ill, succeeding telegrams told of the condition and the family was prepared for the news of his death.
