Maquoketa Record,
July 16, 1902.

Obituary.

Hannah Shaver was born in Rockingham county, Virginia, April 26, 1822; and after a confinement of nine weeks to her bed, she was taken home July 9, 1902, at the ripe old age of 80 years, 3 months and 18 days. She grew to womanhood and was married to Wm. Phillips, Dec. 21, 1841, in her native county, and some years later they located in Augusta county, Virginia, where they lived until after the close of the civil war. From here they came to Iowa, arriving April 3, 1868, where they have since resided. She was the happy mother of seven children, three of whom preceded her to the other shore, viz.: Mrs. A. L. Dyer, who died Aug. 6, 1886; Mrs. John Dever died May 15, 1887; and one daughter who died in infancy. The four children that survive are: Lizzie Guyer of Lost Nation, John, Dewitt and Cornelia Kauffman, who live near the Union church. She made a profession in early life and united with the Christian church at the age of nineteen; was a faithful member, helping in its material support as long as she lived. She also contributed to the support of the Union church, and when health and circumstances permitted she was present at its services and interested in its welfare. She was a faithful and affectionate wife and mother, and she will be sadly missed by her aged companion who shared her joys and sorrows for more than sixty years, and the children all of whom had a warm place in mother’s heart.
