The Clinton Herald Saturday February 14, 1959 p. 8 John M. Croake, 70, Clinton businessman for many years, died suddenly Friday afternoon in the home of his sister, Mrs. Thomas J. (Catherine) Coleman, 442 10th Ave. S. The body is at the Snyder Funeral home where friends may call after 7 p.m. today. A solemn requiem high mass will be celebrated in St. Mary's church Monday at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be at St. Mary's cemetery. The St. Mary's parish will recite the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. John M. Croake was born June 14, 1888, in Clinton, the son of the late William C. and Bridget Hollaran Croake. He was educated in the St. Mary's schools, after which he served in World War I as a lieutenant in Co. B, of the 28th Infantry of the 1st Division. He was wounded while in action at Cantigny, France, and received the Purple Heart. Following the war he entered the restaurant business with his father, and later was in business for himself at 1020 S. 4th St., where he operated a cigar store and lunch counter until his death. He was a member of St. Mary's church; Holy Name society; a charter member of American Legion Post 190; D.A.V.; V.F.W., and was a member of Moose Lodge 363. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Thomas (Catherine) Coleman of Clinton, a niece and three nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, four sisters and five brothers.
