Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Hanover. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Hanover, with full Military Rites accorded by the Hanover Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5300. Friends of Roland’s may call Tuesday, November 13, 2007 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Law-Jones Funeral Home, 202 Monroe Street, Hanover, Illinois.

Roland was born on July 10, 1922, the son of George F. and Laura E. (Beckett) Unangst in Whitton, Illinois. On January 23, 1942, Roland married Betty M. Zane in Kahoka, Missouri. Betty preceded him in death on August 30, 2003.

He graduated from Hanover High School in 1940 and began working at the Savanna Army Depot, Savanna, Illinois and retired as Safety Director in 1971. Roland was a WWII Veteran of the United States Army. His unit supported the 29th Infantry Division, landing on Omaha Beach on June 8, 1944. Roland loved his country above self. He wrote his memoirs of his WWII experience called, “From Hanover to Berlin and Back”. As survivors, we must keep the story of this generation alive.

Roland was a member of Hanover United Methodist Church, Charter Member of the Hanover VFW Post #5300, life member of the Masonic Lodge, former Scout Master; member of the NRA; served for eight years on the Hanover Village Board and Co-chaired the “Save the Army Depot” committee in 1974-1975. He was appointed to the Savanna Army Depot Local Redevelopment Authority (LRA) and served until his death. Board members appreciated his knowledge of the land and he was a key player on committees, which examined buildings usage, land cleanup and job renewal.

Roland or “Bompo” as he was tenderly known to grandchildren and great-grandchildren, enjoyed being a private pilot, fishing, boating, fixing things, selling and buying cars, photography, and gardening. Most of all he loved his family. We will miss his beautiful smile, laughter, the best hugs ever, and endless stories whether real or make believe. He was a gift of joy to all who knew him.

Roland will be dearly missed by one son, Roland Z. “Ron” (Sondra) Unangst of Geneseo, Illinois; two daughters, Linda R. (Ken) Campbell of Geneseo and Vickie (Mel) Gratton of Galena, Illinois; eight grandchildren; Kevin (Mary) Unangst, Brian (Kelly) Unangst, Chad (Nicki) Campbell, Laura (Ron) Bass, Pam (Dan) Kirchner, Scott Gratton, Katherine (Jim) Wilcox and Mark (Marsha) Gratton; thirteen great-grandchildren, Jesse, Jaden and his namesake, Jayce (Roland) Kirchner, Samuel and Alana Gratton, Olivia Gratton, Andrew and Maxwell Unangst, Squire Zane and Brit Unangst, Zane Campbell and Noah and Joshua Bass; nephew Keith Unangst, cousins, great nieces and nephews and special friend Joy McBee.

Roland is preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty; parents and brother George C. Unangst.
In Lieu of flowers memorials may be given in Roland’s name to the Hanover United Methodist Church or Hanover Ambulance Association, which he helped organize.
