Vanderbilt, Dorothy J.

Mrs. Dorothy J. Vanderbilt, 86, Grand Mound, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, October 31, 2007 at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport, Iowa.

Mrs. Vanderbilt, the former Dorothy Jane Haynes was born October 2, 1921 in Hartford Township, Iowa, the daughter of Margaret Wilma (Carroll) and Orvil Wilson Haynes. She graduated from High School in Victor, Iowa, and attended Drake University. Dorothy married John DeDecker and later married Floyd Vanderbilt in June of 1950. During World War II, she worked at the Rock Island Arsenal and later at Spiken’s Calendar Factory, DeWitt. She retired from Rockingham Machine, Pleasant Valley, Iowa. Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist, Church, Grand Mound, the Grand Mound American Legion Auxiliary, Bid and Chatter Card Club and was a former member of the Eastern Star. She was an avid sports fan, especially of her beloved Cubs.

Surviving are her children, Dave (Sue) DeDecker, Orion, Illinois; Peggy (Jerry) Rickey, Geneseo, Illinois; Tom “Moose” Vanderbilt, Grand Mound; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great granddaughters; a very dear friend, Dorothy Crosthwaite, DeWitt.

Preceding Dorothy in death were her a son, Gary Vanderbilt, husbands, John and Floyd and her parents.

Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound, from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 2, 2007. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 3, 2007 in the Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Ed Mutum presiding. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ron Choan, Roger Crosthwaite, Ron Crosthwaite, DeVere Ganzer, Gary Hintz, Jim Ringen and Rita Schwien.
