Arlene M. Matje, 86, of Sabula, IA, died Tuesday, October 16, 2007, at the Alverno Health Care Facility in Clinton, IA. Services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, Clinton, on Saturday, October 20, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory on Friday, October 19, 2007, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Cremation will follow the service. Burial of the cremains will be held next week at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Bellevue, IA.

Arlene was born on July 6, 1921, in Bellevue, IA, the daughter of William and Pearl (Cook) Dieckman. She was a Bellvue High School graduate and attended the University of Dubuque. She married Arthur A. “Pete” Matje Sr. January 20, 1940, in Bellevue, Iowa; he died January 22, 1995. Arlene was a member and very active at Zion Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Ruth Circle and was the head of the Zion Seniors. She was a former Sunday school teacher and superintendent. She was a member of the Ding-A-Lings, the Young at Hearts. She was a former Girl Scout leader, was a volunteer at Whittier School, was active in the Clinton Community Theater, was an avid reader and was a member of the Sabula Library Book Club.

Survivors include her son, Arthur (Susanne) Matje of Eldridge, IA; daughters, Laurel (Roger) Petrich of Siler City, NC and Carol (Volker) Nass of Sabula, IA; nine grandsons, great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

In addition to her husband, her grandson, one brother, two sisters and her parents preceded her in death.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or to a favorite charity.
