George P. Washburn

Visitation: 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Sarah Kretzmann officiating.

DEWITT — George Paul Washburn, 90, of DeWitt and formerly of Calamus, died Friday at Ridgecrest Village, Davenport.

Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Calamus.

Magnus M. Petersen American Legion Post 466 will conduct military rites.

Pallbearers will be Brian Elias, Troy Stuedemann, Blake Elias, Chad Melody, Bill Looney and Duane Petersen.

He was born Sept. 21, 1916, in Giard to George and Mary Torkelson Washburn. He married Ida J. Quaal on Feb. 20, 1943. She died in 2005.

He attended school in Clermont.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a veteran of World War II.

He was a butter maker, working in creameries throughout Iowa. Later, he was the gas and fuel truck driver for Farmer’s Co-op in Calamus. He also sold Mason Shoes for years. He and his wife moved to DeWitt in 1982.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus, New Hope Support Group of DeWitt, and the American Legion of Calamus, where he received a 60-year membership award.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann (Robert) Stuedemann of Clinton and Nancy (Allan) Elias of Davenport; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
