Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Carson and Son Funeral and Cremation Services, Maquoketa.

SERVICES: 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Maquoketa, with the Rev. Jeff Dadisman officiating.

MAQUOKETA — Eva M. Saunders, 82, of Maquoketa, died Monday at Briarwood Care Center, Maquoketa.

Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa. Cremation rites will be accorded.

She was born Nov. 8, 1924, in Maquoketa to Wealthy L. and Della May Barker Miller. She married Earl L. Saunders on Aug. 25, 1946, in Maquoketa.

She was a 1942 graduate of Maquoketa High School. She then attended Maquoketa Junior College for one year and several summers at the University of Northern Iowa Teacher’s College, Cedar Falls. She then received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

She taught for four years in Maquoketa rural schools and later was a seventh- and eighth-grade math teacher at Maquoketa Middle School for a total of 42 years in the teaching profession. After her retirement, she also sold real estate for several years.

She was an original board member of Sunshine Day Care and Preschool, Maquoketa, and served in that capacity for several years. She also was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa and was active in many church activities. In her younger years, she sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school and summer school for many years. She also served as chairwoman for First United Methodist Church Harvest Fest for two years and was an active member of its Fireside Class and Ruth Circle. She also was a lifetime member of Maquoketa VFW Ladies Auxiliary 3633 and Maquoketa American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 75 where she served as treasurer for one year. She also was a longtime member of the B.P.W. and served as its president for two years.

Survivors include her husband; children, Ralph Saunders of Oswego, Ill., and Joan (Ron) Ringennberg of Johnston; two sisters-in-law, Carol Saunders Benson of South Wayne, Wis., and Betty Neiderhiser of Clarence; one brother-in-law, Merlin “Toby” Saunders of Maquoketa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.

An Eva M. Saunders Memorial Fund has been established.
