Thomas Newman Smith Sr.

Visitation: A memorial service will be held in Bellevue, Neb., at a future date.

BELLEVUE, Neb. — Thomas Newman Smith Sr., 85, of Bellevue, died Friday at North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji, Minn. For the past two years, he lived with his daughter, Sherry (Mike) Olson of Clearbrook, Minn.

Inurnment will be in Bellevue Cemetery.

He was born Feb. 16, 1921, to Laura and Shirley Smith in Central City. He married Zillah “Zid” Ann Stanek on Dec. 11, 1946, in Sabula.

He attended grade school and graduated high school in Hopkinton.

He was of the Lutheran faith.

He joined the U.S. Army/Air Force in December of 1940 serving on active duty during World War II, Korean and Vietnam wars. He was stationed in Iowa, California, Kansas, New York, Nebraska and the Panama Canal Zone. He retired in May of 1970 achieving the rank of chief master sergeant.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas (Gwen) Jr. of Boise, Idaho, and Terry of Bellevue; one daughter, Sherry (Mike) Olson of Clearbrook, Minn.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard (Violet) Smith of Sabula; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter, one brother and his parents.

Death date: Jan. 19, 2007
