Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lemke Funeral Homes, South Chapel, 2600 Lincoln Way.

SERVICES: Noon Thursday at the funeral home.

CLINTON — James E. Smith, 70, of Clinton, died Sunday at his home.

Pallbearers will be Michael Schnoor, Shawn Cummings, David Schlecht, Andrew Schnoor, Curtis Mayberry, Dennis Schmidt, Mike Mayberry, Cody Naeve, John Smith and Josh Hansen.

Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery.

He was born Oct. 6, 1936, to Leroy and Marie Steffen Smith in Epworth. He married Veda Cooksley on Feb. 26, 1957, in Epworth.

He attended area schools.

He worked with National Bi-Products for more than 20 years and later worked with IBP for nine years.

He was a member of Jesus Christ Prince of Peace Parish.

Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Becky (Dennis) Cummings of Clinton, Christine (Jimmie) Schnoor of Camanche, Erma (John) Naeve of Bellevue, Patty (Kevin) Mayberry of Ames and June (Frank) Schlecht of Clinton; three sons, William Smith, Donald (Lelia) Smith and Richard (Kris) Smith, all of Clinton; 17 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; one brother, Virgil (Mary) Smith of Cascade; seven sisters, Virginia (Melvin) Liebold of Dubuque, Lavone (Charles) Haffer of Epworth, Margaret (Carl) Frank of Dubuque, Mildred (David) Hosch of Monticello, Salley (Harold) Goeke of Cascade and Karen Smith and Kay Smith, both of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, three grandchildren and one son-in-law.

Death date: Jan. 21, 2007
