The Clinton Herald Tuesday September 18, 1934 p. 5 Funeral services for James M. Croake, 626 Nineteenth avenue South, who died Sunday night in the U.S. Veterans' hospital, Des Moines, will be held Thursday morning. The cortege will leave the home at 8:45 o'clock. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery. Military honors will be accorded him at the grave by the Clinton County post 2288, Veterans of Foreign Wars. James M. Croake was born Sept. 21, 1893, in Clinton. He received his education in St. Mary's school. Surviving are his wife, Martha Witt Croake, his father, William Croake, Sr.; five sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Anna Dooley, Mrs. Arthur Ries, Mrs. Thomas Coleman and the Misses Bridget and Julia Croake, Andrew, William C. and John M. Croake all of Clinton. His mother and two brothers, George and Edward, preceded him in death. Mr. Croake is the first member of the Clinton County V.F.W. post to pass away. He enlisted in Battery A., first Iowa Artillery, May 7, 1917, and was mustered into federal service of Battery A., 126th Field Artillery, 34th division which left for France, June 28, 1918, after being stationed at Fort Logan H. Root and Camp Cody, N.M. Upon reaching the front line they were transferred into the 28th division, Mr. Croake being assigned to Co. C., 109th Infantry, and took part in the heavy fighting at the Orque river and at the Vesle river. Following these battles he was transferred to Supply Co., 108th F.A., in which he served until his discharge, May 26, 1919, returning from France, May 14, 1919.
