The Clinton Herald The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in Prince of Peace Parish, St. Mary's Church for Arthur E. Ries, 78, of 764 13th Ave. South. He died Tuesday in his home. The Rev. Ronald Young will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Pape Funeral Home, where a 7 p.m. vigil service will be conducted. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dale Lawrence, Donald Ashcraft, Leonard Dose, Larry Witt Sr., Gene Anderson and Glen Carlson. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom and William Broderick, Wendell Dodds, William Roberts, Frances Dunlavy, Ken Vogel and Gene Ugarph. He was born March 20, 1920, in Waterloo, to Arthur A. and Mary Croake Ries. He married Jeanne E. Broderick, May 27, 1955 in Burlington. He was a 1937 graduate of St. Mary's High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army Co. B 439th Signal Battalion in Europe and Africa. He had been employed as a postal clerk in Clinton for 38 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where he served as an usher for 30 years. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Loyal Order of the Moose and St. Mary's Alumni Association. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Lisa (Kenneth) Ries-Armstrong of Dubuque, and Mrs. Joellyn (Kenneth) Schawl of Camanche; a son Thomas Ries of North Liberty; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, William James Ries of Clinton. Death date: April 28, 1998.
