Visitation: 12:30 until the service time Wednesday at Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory.

SERVICES: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

CLINTON — Herbert C. “Bert” Nickelsen, 84, of Clinton, died Wednesday at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Robert Walliker, Robert Boegel, Scott Clizbe, Karl Boegel, Richard Nelson, Paul Weih and David Clizbe.

He was born April 16, 1922, in Clinton to Herbert E. and Thora Poppe Nickelsen. He married Jean Lillie on March 29, 1947, in Clinton.

He graduated in 1940 from Clinton High School and in 1948 from the University of Iowa.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force in India from 1942 to 1945.

He retired from Clinton Foods after 34 years of service.

He was a 25-year club member of Clinton Foods. He was a 60-year member of the American Legion and a member of the Iowa University Alumni Association. He also was a member and past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and was named Outstanding Young Man of the year by them in 1953.

Survivors include his wife; cousins; one sister-in-law, Joan Lillie Nelson; and one brother-in-law, Richard D. Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
