Visitation: 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt.

SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt.

DEWITT — Dr. M.E. Shelton, 83, of DeWitt, died Thursday at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Interment will be in Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Calamus. Eugene McManus American Legion Post 238 will conduct military rites.

He was born May 5, 1923, north of Calamus to Harley Games and Alice Pauline Johnson Shelton. He married Elaine Hass on Jan. 20, 1945, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, rural Calamus.

He attended public school in North Dakota, Wheatland and Calamus. He attended Palmer College of Chiropractic.

Upon high school graduation, he was employed as a carpenter until enlisting in the U.S. Navy.

His naval service included training at Purdue University and 87th and Anthony, Chicago, as an aviation electrician. He then served in the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific on the island of Majuro, building an emergency landing field. He was honorably discharged in December of 1944.

After he graduated in 1947, he was a faculty member at Palmer College of Chiropractic and worked with his uncle, Dr. C.J. Christensen in DeWitt. In 1949, he began his own chiropractic practice in Oelwein where he remained until 1964. In 1964, he and his family returned to DeWitt where he practiced until 1989.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Eugene McManus American Legion Post 238, DeWitt, and was a former active member of the Oelwein Rotary and Jaycees and an antique auto club in Clinton County.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Jim Shelton of DeWitt; two daughters, Shirley (Dillon) Franks of Charlottesville, Va., and Sally Scott of Clarkston, Mich.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, DeVere (Joan) Shelton of Calamus.
