SAVANNA, Ill. — Ruth O. Sartwell, 87, of Manteno, Ill., and formerly of Savanna, died Friday at the Miller Health Care Facility, Kankakee, Ill.
She was born Feb. 25, 1919, to Jonathan and Mary Benz Dannels in Savanna. She married Ammon B. Sartwell on July 10, 1941, in Norfolk, Va. He died in 1947.
She was a 1937 graduate of Savanna High School.
In 1943, she and her husband bought a root beer stand that later became the Chicken Coop Drive-In. She owned and operated it until 1970.
She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the VFW, Wa-tan-ye Club, Navy Mothers and was a Girl Scout leader.
Survivors include three daughters, Joyce (Joe) Garcia of Grand Rapids, Mich., Renee (Jack) Gorham of Manteno and Rebecca Hall of Centennial, Colo.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Dannels of Savanna.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Savanna Children’s Christmas Fund.
