MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. — Dr. L. James “Jim” Hitz, 81, of Mount Carroll, died Friday at his home.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
He was born Nov. 30, 1924, in Chicago to Leonard and Pauline Amstutz Hitz. He married Veray Collopy on Aug. 14, 1954, in Chicago. She died June 17.
He graduated from Northwestern University and Loyola Dental School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He later moved to Savanna, Ill., to start a dental practice. He also lived in Mount Carroll and Lemont, Ill., before retiring from in 1990.
He was a member of the Masons and Tabala Shrine where he sang in the choir for many years. He also was an active member of the Natural History Museum and did volunteer work for them.
Survivors include four sons, David (Colleen) Hitz of Manteno, Leonard (Cynthia) Hitz of Forks, Wash., Paul (Julee) Hitz of Mount Carroll and John Hitz of Wilmington, Ill.; two daughters, Carla (Gary) Whitebread of Mount Carroll and Rachael (Mark) Edwards of Fairplay, Colo.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A general memorial fund has been established in his name.
