James B. “Jim” Duffy

SAVANNA, Ill. — James B. “Jim” Duffy, 68, of Savanna, died Monday at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Burial will be in St. John Catholic Cemetery, Savanna.

He was born Oct. 27, 1937, in Cascade to Bernard and Bernadine Honnerbaum Duffy. He married Harlene Secoy Garcia on Dec. 2, 1966, in Princeton, Ill.

He graduated from Hanover (Ill.) High School in 1955.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958 in Korea.

He worked as a construction laborer until 1967. He then joined Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons Local 587. In 1984, he became a business agent with Local 587. After a merger, he retired in 1996 from Local 11, Area 587.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna; Knights of Columbus; and a lifetime member of VFW Post 2223, Savanna, where he served on the honor guard. He also was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 11, Yuma, Ariz.; Savanna Moose Lodge; and Fraternal Order of Eagles, Clinton.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Michael (Joanne) Garcia of Elmhurst, Ill.; one daughter, Kathleen (Gale) Groves of Yuma; two grandchildren; one brother in-law, Bill Thulen of Savanna; two nieces and two nephews; and five great-nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in his name for the Savanna Ambulance Association.
