Dr. James Ellis Dixon

James died peacefully while he and his wife were visiting their only daughter and granddaughter in Albuquerque, N.M.

Jim was a native Iowan and an avid Hawkeye fan. After attending Morningside College in Sioux City, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Air and served in the military from 1949-1952. While stationed at the Naval Air Station in Atlantic City, N.J., he met his future wife Nancy Lutz.

After he was discharged from the Navy, he attended Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. He went on to the University of Iowa where he received his doctor of dental surgery degree, and was a member of the Delta Sigma Dental fraternity.

His family moved to Clinton, Iowa where Jim practiced general dentistry for 35 years. Jim was active in the local, district and state dental societies. Jim was also a member of the Elks Club, a 32nd degree Mason and the Flying Dentists Association, a professional and social organization that focuses on missionary work.

While in Clinton, his favorite hobbies were flying, golf, bridge, reading, downhill skiing and traveling. He lectured in Beirut, Lebanon and Varna, Bulgaria. He had two papers on dentistry published in those countries.

After retiring from his private practice in Iowa, he worked as a civilian dentist at both Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana and at Fort Hood, Texas. After having several heart attacks, he was forced to give up practicing dentistry, which he really enjoyed.

After retiring for the third time, he and Nancy settled in the hill country in Lago Vista, Texas, where they resided for 16 years. They enjoyed playing bridge, taking long walks and watching all the wildlife. They joined the “Lone Star Travel Club” out of Austin, a social organization that also supports charities. These great people became their second family and shared wonderful memories motoring down the highways and byways.

Jim will always be remembered for his big smile, gentle nature and good sense of humor. He was a good husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend and will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

He leaves his wife Nancy Lorraine after 55 years of marriage, daughter Nancee Lee Dixon and granddaughter Kallie Lynn Dixon, both from Albuquerque, N.M. His sister Donna Madison from Burnsville, Minn., brother Jack Dixon from Hansen, Idaho and all of their children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents George Ellis and Mildred Irene Dixon from Correctionville, Iowa. His ashes will be scattered in the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 20 at that cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please send any donations you wish to contribute to the Alzheimer’s Association, or the charity of your choice.
