SAVANNA, Ill. — John J. Smolek, 89, of Savanna, died Wednesday at Mercy Medical Center–Clinton.
Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Savanna.
He was born July 6, 1917, to John Karl and Marie J. Gajdostik Smolek in Savanna. He married Beulah Arlene Gaar on Nov. 29, 1941, in Savanna.
He graduated from Savanna High School in 1937. He attended two years at the Federal Engineering School, Chicago.
He entered the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943 and served in the 611 Tank Destroyer Battalion.
He worked at the Savanna Army Depot for 40 years until retiring in 1981.
He played violin, drums and the accordion with the Smokey Valley Boys Band, Glen Law Orchestra and Eddie Uhl Ranchhands Band.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna; the Knights of Columbus; National Association of Retired Federal Employees; and Savanna American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Joyce (Ed) Martin of Freeport, Ill.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son and one sister.
