Clinton Herald - December, 1944: Dale R. Leonard Memorial is Held
A memorial service for Pvt. Dale R. Leonard, who died in France Dec 1 from wounds, were held Monday afternoon in the First Congregational church. The Rev. Verne E. Spindell conducted the service and musical selections were by Mrs. S.H. Coman soloist, and Mrs. A. Z. Munson, organist.
On the altar were a plaque, received by the family from President Roosevelt, and Pvt Leonard’s picture. The flag was presented to Pvt. Leonard’s wife by Grover Lesher, representing June Van Meter post, American Legion. Other organizations represented were Clinton county chapter V.F.W. and the Lyons Ex-Servicemen’s association. Members of Gen. MacArthur’s Army Mothers club members attended the service in a group.
Those here from out of town were Mrs. Dale Leonard and daughter, Peggy, of Washington, D.C., Mrs. L. Hutchinson of Wapello and Mrs. Roy Bisby and Mrs. George Yearning of Blairstown. High mass for Pvt. Leonard was celebrated Tuesday morning in St. Mary’s Catholic church by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. T.F. Galligan, V.F.
