SERVICES: 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Long Grove Christian Church. Private graveside services will be at Mount Joy Cemetery preceding the service at the church. Nelson Funeral Home, DeWitt, is in charge of arrangements.

DEWITT — Blanche Alice Baughman, 98, at West Wing Place in DeWitt, died Wednesday.

Cremation rites were accorded.

She was born Nov. 14, 1907, to John and Wilma Mohr Kreiter in Lincoln Township, Scott County. She married Lester C. Baughman on Dec. 27, 1927, at Long Grove Christian Church. He died in 1996.

She graduated from Central High School, Davenport.

She and her husband farmed for 35 years. She also was a homemaker.

She was a member of Long Grove Christian Church. She also was a member of the Scott County Farm Bureau serving as president of the ladies division in Butler Township. She sang in the county chorus and was a member of the Woodmen Circle, the women’s division of the Woodmen of the World, serving as secretary and later becoming Iowa state president and vice president of the Iowa Fraternal Congress. She was a 4-H leader of the Butler Township girls’ 4-H Club. She served on the county 4-H committee and also was a camp counselor for both the county and the state. She was a member of Christian Women’s Fellowship at Long Grove Christian Church. She served as Sunday school superintendent and directed a junior choir. She was a member of the Eldridge Pythian Sisters, Eldridge Sportsmen’s Club and Scott County Historical Society. She was a member of the Putnam Museum and the Museum Guild where she served as president. She was a volunteer at the museum and served about 50 hours a year, mostly in the Discovery Room.

She earned a student pilot’s license and later became a navigator and co-pilot for her husband. She belonged to the Iowa and International Flying Farmers. She was elected Iowa Flying Farmers queen.

Survivors include two daughters, Petra (Don) Westphal of Long Grove and Maxine (Tom) Robie of Holstein; 14 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made in her name to Long Grove Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sons.

Death date: Aug. 16, 2006
