Ruth Sykes

CABLE, Wis. — Ruth Sykes, 73, of Cable, died Thursday at her home.

Interment will be in Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison, Ill.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Olson, Amanda Cook, Skipper Sykes, Tara Sykes, John Rieckhoff, Geni Rieckhoff, Susan Rieckhoff and Caleb Sykes.

She was born March 20, 1933, in Morrison to Cornelius and Ruvine Brackemeyer Akker. She married William “Bill” Sykes on Feb. 28, 1952, in Morrison. He died in 1995.

She was educated in Morrison schools and graduated from Morrison High School.

Following her marriage, she lived in Morrison. In 1962, she and her husband purchased the Mogasheen Resort, Cable, and spent their summers operating the resort. In 1972, they became permanent residents of Cable, to operate the resort year round. In 1995, they turned over management of the resort to her daughter and son-in-law.

She was a member of Cable Christian and Missionary Alliance Church where she was involved in a variety of church activities. She went on mission trips to China and Alabama. For the last 10 years, she wrote letters to prison inmates for the Source of Light Ministries of Georgia. She was active in the Cable Homemakers, Red Hatters, Namakagon Lake Association and Namakagon Community Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Charla (Michael) Olson of Morrison and Patsy (Henry) Rieckhoff of Cable; three sons, Terry (Julie) Sykes of DeSoto, Wis., Ronald (Lola) Sykes of Mounds View, Wis., and Phillip (Carrie) Sykes of Dubuque; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Virginia Williams of Glendale, Calif.; two brothers, Wayne (Marilyn) Akker of Morrison and Lee (Carolyn) Akker of Ellensburg, Pa.

Memorials may be made to Cornerstone Church, Blaine, Minn., and Christian Missionary Alliance Church, Cable.
